Faust und Backhaus Environmental Consulting GbR (F+B) is an SME founded in 2001 as a spin-off from the University of Bremen, Germany. F+B provides scientific consultancy, contract research, and technical services in the fields of ecotoxicology, chemicals risk assessment, and environmental management. As a sub-contracting research Partner F+B contributed to the EU projects BEAM ( Bridging Effect Assessment of Mixtures to Ecosystem Situations and Regulation , 2000-2003), ACE (Analyzing Combination Effects of Mixtures of Estrogenic Chemicals in Marine and Freshwater Organisms, 2001-2005), and EDEN (Endocrine Disrupters: Exploring Novel Endpoints, Exposure, Low-Dose- and Mixture-Effects in Humans, Aquatic Wildlife and Laboratory Animals, 2002-2006) and participated in national projects on chemicals risk assessment and chemicals regulation. As a management service to project coordinators, F+B set up and maintained websites for the EU projects COMPARE, BEAM, ACE, EDEN, and the CREDO Cluster of Research into Endocrine Disruption, as well as for national research organisations.

Role in the project

F+B paticipates in the estimation of human intake of combinations of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) through food and consumer products to produce a document on human cumulative EDC exposures together with other partners. F+B will also be involved in the the overall analysis of CONTAMED project results for improved predictive toxicological risk assessment in Europe. They are also partly responsible for administrative tasks, such as the establishment and maintenance of this project website and a cluster website.

Key persons involved

		Group leader, Dr Michael Faust studied Biology at Bremen University (Germany) where he also earned his PhD. He acts as managing Partner in F+B.
		Group leader, Dr Thomas Backhaus also studied Biology at Bremen University and obtained his PhD from Bremen University. He holds a position as Associate Professor at Goeteborg University, Sweden, and provides consultancy services to F+B as a secondary occupation. Both are experts in the field of mixture ecotoxicology. They have extensive experience in trans-disciplinary national and European environmental research projects, environmental management in industry and website design for research groups.
